CIWM Committees

CIWM Specialist Committees

The effective governance and strategic direction of CIWM is dependent on the dedicated work of several specialist committees. Consisting of experienced volunteer members and subject-matter experts, these groups report directly to the Board of Trustees, providing rigorous oversight, expert technical advice, and ensuring the organisation meets its legal, ethical, and professional obligations. Their contributions are essential to championing best practice, advancing professional standards, and securing the financial and operational integrity of CIWM.

Audit and Risk Committee

The Audit Committee is chaired by an independent Chartered Accountant and reports directly to the Board of Trustees. It exists to ensure that CIWM’s financial management systems are rigorous and comply with the legal requirements of both company law and charity law.

The Corporate Governance and Professional Ethics Committee

The Corporate Governance & Professional Ethics Committee is responsible for both monitoring and reviewing the constitution of the organisation, and for dealing with individual members' alleged contraventions of the Code of Professional Conduct.

Qualifications and Professional Standards Committee

The role of the Qualifications and Professional Standards Committee is to oversee the design and implementation of CIWM’s Learning and Development Strategy, and to ensure that CIWM meets its responsibilities and obligations as an Awarding Organisation and End Point Assessment Organisation overseen by the educational regulators in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It also updates and maintains membership standards and commissions projects that further CIWM’s position as a Professional Body or its charitable objectives. The committee is responsible for reporting its recommendations to CIWM’s Board of Trustees annually regarding the organisation’s compliance with the Conditions of Recognition.

Policy and Innovation Forum

The Policy and Innovation Forum is responsible for providing strategic direction and input on key policy and legislative developments across the resources and waste sector. It works to formulate and influence CIWM's public position on environmental regulation and emerging trends. The Forum also identifies and promotes leading innovation and best practices to drive the sector toward a more circular economy model.

Finance and Investment Committee

The Finance and Investment Committee provides oversight of CIWM’s financial affairs. This includes monitoring the annual budget, reviewing financial performance against strategic objectives, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of CIWM. The committee also manages the investment strategy for the organisation’s reserves, balancing return and risk in line with charitable investment principles.
