At CIWM, membership delivers more for your professional life. We provide the world-class knowledge, skills and accreditation needed to unlock potential - providing more connections, resources, representation and partnerships for a community that is shaping a sustainable future.
Our vision is a thriving and resilient world, enabled by the expertise of our community. We also play a vital role in shaping the future of the resources and waste sector. We provide an impartial, influential and respected voice in policy discussions, ensuring our members’ views are heard and that policy development is evidence-led, science-based and data-driven. We are not only championing best practice, we are actively shaping policy across the sector.
The CIWM Group expanded further in 2024 with the acquisition of the Circular Economy Institute, bridging the gap between the resources and waste sector and the global circular economy industry. This move solidifies the CIWM Group’s position as a global leader in driving the transition from a linear to a circular economy, empowering circularity and resource efficiency on a global scale.

Charter and Constitution
CIWM’s Royal Charter was granted on 1 March 2002 and came into effect on 1 July 2002, with amendments to the Charter and Bye-Laws subsequently granted by the Privy Council on 27 July 2004.
The Royal Charter sets out CIWM’s "objects" to advance for the public benefit the art and science of wastes management worldwide and so to promote education, the protection of public health, and the preservation of the environment, and for that purpose to further promote and maintain good standards of practice, competence, and conduct by all its members. This Royal Charter forms the basis of CIWM’s Constitution together with its Bye-Laws (which may be varied only with the approval of the Privy Council), Regulations (which may be varied with the approval of the Annual General Meeting of CIWM Members), and Practice Directions (which may be varied by agreement of CIWM’s General Council).
